Welcome to Class 3’s page 2018/19
Welcome to Year 3. This year Mr Sylvester is the teacher. Mrs Jackson and Mrs Gash are the teaching assistants. We are really looking forward to this year, it will be hard work but we will have lots of fun along the way!

This term we are learning all about the history of Selby, the physical features of the landscape around us and the human geography of the area.
Please remember we have P.E. on Mondays and Tuesdays. We also have Forest school on a Tuesday afternoon and swimming for those that still go on a Wednesday afternoon.
We had a visitor in this morning to teach us all about the Jewish way of life. We were told lots of facts and even got to try and make bread.

Children’s University graduation
Today was our graduation and choir assembly celebration!
We had fun reading a maths story and playing maths games.
We are almost ready for the Summer Fayre, we hope to see you there!
Selby sings performance
The day finally came and we arrived at Selby Abbey in the beautiful summer sunshine. We were all very excited to perform the songs we had been practising for a few weeks. We rehearsed all morning and had two outstanding performances to a packed Abbey. Well done to all involved, it was a fantastic day! Thank you to all the audience members that came to support, to performing arts and Sam for putting on a fantastic event and finally the children for making Longman’s Hill staff very proud indeed!

We were very lucky and had an author visit us and tell us about how a book was written from the first idea and design to the final product. Stephen inspired us to write stories.
Selby local walk
Class 3 and 4 went on a lovely walk around Selby to improve our map reading skills. We followed a map and added our own symbols for places of interest.
Today we decided to learn how to knot tie!
Selby Sings – Session 4
Today we had our final session with Sam for our Selby Sings performance. We heard all the songs that will be performed in Selby Abbey on the 4th July and now we have to learn them all. Look out for a letter coming home soon so you can get your hands on one of these sought after tickets for for the performance.
It looked like rain so we used our teamwork skills to build a den to keep us all dry.
Today we used our watercolour skills and took notice of our surroundings again. This was a really relaxing session with some fantastic results!
Selby sings – session 3
The last verses and chorus were built today and we are really looking forward to hearing all the songs made by all the schools after half term.
Running race heats
Well done to all the children’s in the heats today, you were amazing. Good luck to all the finalists. We love to be active.
Selby sings – session 2
In this session we built the chorus and verse of our song… it was very exciting!
Today we made the most of the beautiful weather and spent time around our school grounds watching the wildlife and taking notice of our surroundings. We sketched some of the wonderful trees we have on our school field.
Today we were really lucky to have a teacher in from Selby High to teach us a dance routine. The theme was ‘the circus’ and we had a great time learning and creating our own dance moves.
Selby sings – session 1
Today we met Sam and began to build our ideas for the song we are going to write, we are really excited to see and hear what it sounds like!
Today we visited the Yurt and made ‘mini dens’ using our teamwork and listening skills. We were also resourceful.
Design and Technology
We had a brilliant time designing, making, testing and editing our moving cars!
This term we are learning all about the Anglo-Saxons and their invasions.

Fab family event- Take notice
We are all set up and ready for the ‘take notice’ event this morning. Look out for updates on our amazing artwork.
Well done Amy for writing a fantastic story for the Selby Times competition. An Easter egg for everyone in the class was the prize! Yummy!

We loved exploring and trying out our new playground equipment in the sunshine!
Maths drop in morning
Class 3 had a drop in morning looking at maths around us in our ‘curves of pursuit’ task. Everybody did so well! Thanks to all the adults that could come in and help/enjoy our maths time.
Class 3 visit the yurt for the first time!
Skipping workshop day!
We had a fantastic skipping workshop day today learning lots of new skipping skills and we can’t wait to try them out in the playground and at home! Everybody had a go and tried their best which made the coach and staff very proud indeed. We even got to share with the school what we had learnt throughout the session. Remember there are still a limited amount of ropes available at the office to buy if you’d like them.
Thank you Mrs Perkins for our treats, we are going to miss you!
Red Nose Day
We loved taking our first books out of the library this morning. Remember to 1. Only take one book at a time, 2. Return that book before you take another and 3. Look after them so other people can enjoy them. Thank you!
World book day
We had an amazing time on World book day playing lots of book related games and doing lots of reading. The children (and adults) looked fantastic! During assembly we saw lots of fantastic video messages sent to us from various Coronation Street stars, Harry Hill and even the Bodycoach, Joe Wicks made an appearance. This was all topped off with our Longman’s Little Library opening. I think you’ll agree it looks amazing!
Tour De Yorkshire visit
On Tuesday 5th March we were really lucky to have the Tour De Yorkshire trophies come into school. We were told all about how far the riders have to race and what they have to do to win these fantastic trophies.
Well done Isabella for winning the class banner competition for Selby Abbey’s 950th anniversary! What a fantastic piece of artwork!
French culture day
We had a French culture day on Thursday 21st February and learned about French landmarks, we then used our art skills to mosaic them. In the afternoon we had a wonderful opportunity to visit the other classes and see what they had been learning, we were mightily impressed!
Well done Emily for achieving the highest score in the school for Mathletics! An Amazing achievement.
Class 3 enjoyed the snow!
On Thursday 24th January, Jed from Up and at ’em history came into our school to help us learn about the Anglo-Saxon way of life and our country’s history. We learned about Anglo-Saxon place names, burials, weapons and armour, crime and punishment and much more! Lots of the children dressed up and looked amazing, even some of the adults joined in too!

This term we have been learning about South America We have made carnival masks and looked at the South American culture. Here are some of the masks we made, do you like them?
In Science we have been looking at rocks and fossils. We went on a trip to the Yorkshire museum and learned how fossils were made. Can you tell we had lots of fun?
In Literacy we have learned how to write our own adventure story and poems all about our senses.
In Numeracy we have learned all about place value, adding and subtracting. We have also began to look at multiplying and dividing. We love maths, especially when we get stuck as this is when we learn the most!
We had a judo taster session in November and we all loved it!
We had a fantastic time performing our Christmas production, here is some of the artwork we designed to accompany it.
Academic Year 2016/17
Welcome to Year 3. This Year Miss Thorpe is the teacher. Mrs Jackson and Miss Long also work in here.
Our topic during the Autumn term is “Come To The Carnival” We will be learning lots about Brazil and the celebrations they have there.
The children are well on their way to becoming fabulous touch typists after our meta-cognition challenge.
They have already got off to a fantastic start, with lots of hands on learning in Maths.
What a busy term it has been! The children have learnt so much.
We have begun our “Come to the carnival” topic by learning all about Brazil.
We have imitated a non-chronological report about the rainforests and are now innovating a version about the Olympics.
In geography, we have learnt about the location of Brazil and some of its physical and human features.
In DT, we have researched and designed our carnival masks, ready to make!
In science, we are learning all about rocks! We have learnt the 3 types of natural rocks, how these are formed and the key features of these. We went on a visit to Scarborough where we saw a real fossil of a dinosaur footprint and learnt how palaeontologists use these fossils to learn all about dinosaurs size and movement.
Academic Year 2015/6
Welcome to Year 3. This Year Miss Thorpe is the teacher. Mrs Jackson, Mrs McIntyre also work in here.
Wow I can’t believe that it is the summer term already. The children have done some fantastic learning this year. Our current topics is Vicious Vikings! We have been learning all about the Vikings and where they came from. We have:
located the countries on maps, created a timeline of the events, written stories about their adventures, made runes and Viking ships.
In RE we have been learning what life would be like as a Muslim child. The children have written fantastic diaries as a child during an Islamic festival.
The Big First Aid Lesson
I can’t wait for this. The children will be joining in the live lesson on Friday 17th June. Hopefully, the will learn some life saving skills.
As part of a National Competition called ‘The Fiver Challenge’ each group in our class has been given £5 to grow into a business! We have decided to run competitions for the Summer Fayre. We hope you will be able to support our business and join us at the Summer Fayre on Friday 24th June!
Don’t forget Year 3 are visiting the library on Tuesday 21st June. It will be a fantastic time to see a range of new books.
Sainsbury’s Schools Sports Day
This will be on Wednesday 22nd June (weather dependant) It will be lovely to celebrate all our learning in PE this Year.
PE in Year 3 is on a Monday.
Forest Schools this term is on a Thursday
Homework is given out on a Friday and due back the following Thursday.

Year 3 have settled in so well. I am so proud of the progress they have been making.
We have some fantastic Dragonologists amongst us! The children have now made 2 class books teaching people all about how to look after their pet dragons, do call in to take a look. At the moment we are creating myths, we have looked at a Chinese myth about how the 24 rivers were created. We innovated this to create a myth about how The Tianshan volcano group, was formed. The children are now inventing their own myths to describe how China’s Yellow river was created.
On Tuesday, Year 3 participated in a world record challenge. We learnt all about DNA and made our own DNA structures.
Year 3 have continued to read a staggering amount, since September we have placed in the reading challenge every week. Keep it up Year 3, it is lovely to see how your motivation to read has shown in your reading ability and more importantly your love of reading.
Last week we visited the Hindu temple, we learnt lots of interesting facts. Below are some photos of our experience.

Rap along to Hip Hop 8 times table download-8time
We are celebrating the 175th anniversary of the opening of the railway line from Selby to Hull. A special figure visited us from the past ‘George Hudson’ – The Railway King! We had an exciting day finding out lots of information about the building of the railway line from Selby to Hull. We dressed up and pretended to be Railway Navvies for the day, it was fun but very tiring! Here are some pictures from the day.

Anglo – Saxon Artefacts
We had lots of fun investigating the Anglo-Saxon artefacts and especially when we tried them on!
Our Visit to Magna!
Year 3 are currently studying Forces within Science. We visited the Magna Centre and investigated different Forces.
As part of our ‘Carnival’ theme during the Autumn term, we have had the opportunity to learn to play the drums. It was brilliant fun, if a little loud! Year 4 joined in too.
